The doctrine of humanity is important because of the present crisis in human self-understanding. There is great interest in the question 'What is the human?" and also great confusion over the answer.
The quest for identity has always been part of the normal process of maturation. However, many parents fail to instill values in their children, or advocate values they themselves do not manifest in their lifestyles. Traditional sources of values (the church, schools & the state) have become suspect in the postmodern world.
